Known issues fixed in version 10.13

Reminder on natural caregivers claims

With the release of version 10.10, we announced in this publication that the data entry requirements in DT Max to make a Quebec claim on line 462 (code 02), of the TP-1 return, had changed. In short, to claim the tax credit for caregivers on the Quebec return (maximum $1000):

  1. A dependant file (for the eligible relative) must be present in the family.
  2. The dates during which the supported relative lived with the claimant are now entered in the dependant's file with the Start-Date.s group.

We had also taken the opportunity to review data entry requirements for claims of federal amounts at lines 306 and 315 (amount for infirm dependants age 18 or over and caregiver amount respectively). Federal data entry in DT Max has not changed.

Please take a moment to review these particulars by referring back to the What's new section discussing caregiver credits.

Note: If there are two eligible parents living with the claimant who happen to form a couple, please remember that there are no spousal optimizations performed between dependants in a DT Max family. In such cases, you will also need to create a family for the couple of eligible relatives to produce their tax returns.

Change of the default claimant for the Quebec tax credit for natural caregivers

Starting with version 10.13, DT Max defaults the claim for this refundable tax credit appearing on line 462 to the spouse with the higher income. Please use the Optimize keyword to switch the credit from one spouse to another if need be. This will affect all eligible relatives.

Splitting the Quebec natural caregiver tax credit

Much like the defunct amount for dependent children, there are several scenarios under which the Quebec natural caregiver tax credit needs to be shared amongst persons who are not spouses. As long as the maximum allowable for the eligible relative is not exceeded, this can be done.

Using the Transfer-OV keyword in the relative's file, you can provide all the details to share the tax credit while making sure the balance is not mistakenly given to the spouse. Note that it is normal that Schedule H does not have a line showing how much another claimant is taking.

New warning issued for QPIP earnings

In accordance to government guidelines, DT Max issues a warning when the PPIP-Earn keyword is left blank. If indeed the Quebec parental insurance plan earnings are at zero, an entry of $0 is required.
